Tips for Virtual Instruction

01/07/2021

DON'T HIDE

Be sure to use video and show your face!  Your students want to see you.  Be careful not to make long videos (aim for 3-5 minutes).  Attention spans online are a lot shorter than face-to-face.

KEY CONCEPTS

Think "less is more."  Focus on making lessons meaningful.  Do not overassign or overteach.

UTILIZE A SCHEDULE

Schedules are so important.  Just as we follow a schedule in school, use schedules for virtual instruction.  Post classwork and/or assignments the same day/time.  Avoid posting randomly.  Consistency is key.

USE WHAT WORKS

You know your students best.  Assign the same type of work you would if students were in person.  If students work better using paper and pencil, allow them to do so.  Utilize online discussion tools for group discussions.

STAY ORGANIZED

Create an overview of the week's schedule on your website homepage to help students and parents know what's coming up.  Make sure everything is labeled clearly and students have easy access to any resources they may need.

LISTEN TO YOUR STUDENTS

Get student feedback and respond to it.  Ask them if they are having trouble accessing any resources.  Ask if they have any suggestions on how to improve virtual learning.  They might have great ideas!
